Rev. George Hummer(l) and Laverne Leese were dual recipients of the 2011 Golden Deeds Awards.

Rev. George Hummer, a World War II Purple Heart Recipient, was nominated for the award by Patti Wildasin, Business Manager for the Hanover Area Chapter of the American Red Cross for his volunteer work at the Hanover Chapter since 1987.  George assists with the organization's blood mobile, its food bank, maintenance and recycling efforts among other things.  George also raises money for veterans staying at the Lebanon veterans Administration Medical Center by collecting aluminum cans.

Mr. Laverne Leese was nominated for the award by Liam E. Behrens, Chief Executive Officer of the Hanover Area Family YMCA, for his support and contributions over the years to the YMCA. He is a past member of the Hanover Area YMCA Board of Directors and the Littlestown Branch YMCA Board of Managers.  He currently is a member of the Board of Trustees, a Cornerstone Benefactor of the YMCA, and a member of the Heritage Club.  In addition to actively supporting the YMCA, he is very active in the community.  He is a member of the Hanover Hospital's Board and a chairman for the Annual Support Committee.  He is a member of the Adams County Historical Society and the Adams County Community Foundation and their Investment and Finance Committee.

Both men received their awards on November 15, 2011, in a club meeting at the Lutheran Retirement Village at Utz Terrace.  As recipients of the awards, a donation of $250 was made to the charity of each man's choice.

The Exchange Club of Hanover will be seeking nominations for the 60th Annual Golden Deeds Award in September 2012. This award is given to a person or persons who have shown self-sacrifice in making a significant contribution to the quality of life in the Hanover Area.

Often good deeds are done behind the scenes and are unrecognized.  This is your opportunity to show that special individual(s) that our community cares and appreciates their efforts.

The recipient(s) will be our guest(s) of honor at the 60th "Golden Deeds Dinner" on Tuesday, November 20, 2012. A permanent record of the award will be kept in the Guthrie Memorial Library, Hanover's Public Library.

Nominations along with a brief resume should be sent to Bob Channell, 173 McAllister Street, Hanover, Pennsylvania 17331.  For more information call 717-632-1991.
